What influences local SEO for roofers?

Seven things influence local SEO for roofers: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your proximity to the searcher, your service and area pages, the links pointing at your site, how searchers behave with your listing, and the consistency of your business information across the web. Google blends all seven into three judgments — relevance, distance, prominence — and most roofers only ever work on one of them. Here's the full list, ranked roughly by weight.

1. Your Google Business Profile

The single largest influence on Map Pack rankings. Primary category (“Roofing contractor”), secondary categories, service descriptions written in the words homeowners search, real job photos, posts, and Q&A. In Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors survey, profile signals are the biggest slice of the local equation — roughly a third. Most roofing profiles are half-finished, which is exactly why completing yours is the fastest win. The full checklist is in our Google Business Profile guide for roofers.

2. Reviews — count, rating, recency

Reviews influence rankings twice: Google reads volume, score, and how recently they arrived; homeowners read them to decide who to call. A roofer who asks every happy customer by text, right after the job, compounds this factor on autopilot.

3. Proximity to the searcher

Google shows roofers near the person searching — it's the factor you can't buy. What you cando is stop losing towns you actually serve: that's factor four.

4. Service & area pages on your website

One page ranks for one place. A real page for “roof repair in [town]” for each town you serve — with genuinely local detail — is how roofers rank beyond their home city. A single “Areas we serve” list page doesn't do it. This is the most common gap we find in roofing sites, and it's a core part of local SEO for roofers.

5. Links and mentions (prominence)

Google trusts businesses the web vouches for: supplier listings, trade associations, local sponsorships, news mentions, and content other sites reference. Links are the slowest factor to build by hand — which is why SEO for Roofers builds them automatically through its network, alongside the ~30 monthly articles.

6. Searcher behavior

Clicks on your listing, calls from your profile, direction requests, photo views — engagement tells Google its choice was right. You influence this with better photos, a sharper business description, and review responses that read like a human wrote them.

7. NAP consistency

Your Name, Address, and Phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — site, profile, directories. Mismatches fragment Google's confidence in who you are. Boring, mechanical, worth an afternoon.

So what actually moves the needle?

If you only do three things: complete the profile (factor 1), build a review habit (factor 2), and get real service-area pages plus steady content live on your site (factors 4–5). The first two you can do yourself this month. The third is the grind — SEO for Roofers automates it for $99/month, and your free SEO plan will show you which factor is currently costing you the most calls.
